Why The Big Green Egg Grill Smokes Other Barbeque Grills

If you're a grill enthusiast, you have most likely heard of the Big Green Egg grill. It is a ceramic barbeque grill which you can use as a bbq grill, smoker or even a brick oven. It is so flexible you are able to cook all sorts of things from hamburgers and steaks and other traditional barbeque grill foods to desserts, bread and even pizza.

Eggheads love the Big Green Egg, but you might be asking what makes the Egg (as it's fondly called) different from other barbecue grills.

Probably the greatest distinction is the appearance. The Big Green Egg smoker is well, green and in the shape of a big egg. Though I can't say why it is green, I can state that the egg shape appeared to be designed (purposely) to produce the means to control and retain the heat inside the smoker better than other grills.

The next largest distinction is the material. Instead of being made using metal, the Big Green Egg has thick ceramic walls. Ceramic is quite a bit more sturdy than other materials, so the Egg will last longer than other grills, it can be used year long (even with unusually cold temperatures). It is also less dangerous than other grills, especially if there are little ones running around, since the ceramic material stays much cooler than conventional metal barbecue grills and because you always grill with the lid down, which means you won't have to worry about flare-ups.

There are many other differences however one of my favorite features is definitely the following the Big Green Egg has. There are plenty of Egg supporters and events throughout the United States, and Eggheads are always eager to share their stories, advice in addition to recipes at gatherings and also on the Egghead discussion board. I can't think of another grill that has this kind of following.

I will admit, the Egg does have a few shortcomings when compared to other barbecue grills. For example, it is not a cheap grill. You should expect to spend around $700 to get a large Big Green Egg. Also, you will want to use lump wood charcoal, which isn't always readily available and can be quite a bit more expensive in comparison with traditional charcoal briquettes. The Big Green Egg also has a smaller grilling surface area than many gas grills, which suggests you will need to have a backup grill when entertaining lots of people.

In spite of this, the versatility of the Big Green Egg grill, the capability to grill, smoke or bake with your Egg, as well as the awesome results you get (the Egg can be quite forgiving, even for newbie cooks) are worthy of the cost. If you are a bbq lover and you do a lot of smoking in addition to barbecuing you will appreciate the quality and the results you will get with the Big Green Egg.
